10 Taco Spots to Try in Kansas City

Mission Taco Joint

Mission Taco Joint is known for its delicious tacos and vibrant atmosphere. With hints of west coast style, it offers a unique twist on traditional Mexican cuisine. Whether you’re craving classic carne asada tacos or adventurous options like Korean barbecue tacos, Mission Taco Joint aims to deliver a memorable dining experience with every bite. Our team recently enjoyed a custom taco bar at the Park Place location. The setup was perfect for a group party!

Ponak’s Mexican Kitchen

Ponak’s has been a mainstay on Southwest Boulevard for over 45 years. Try the Taco Sonora, a deep-fried flour tortilla filled with tender shredded beef. Its sure to feed your Tex Mex craving every time.

El Pollo Rey

Your choices at El Pollo Rey are chicken, more chicken or even more chicken, and you don’t need anything else because it is wood-fired perfection. The no frills counter serve spot is perfect for grab-no-go picnics at a park or a tailgate.

San Antonio Carniceria y Tortilleria

This butcher shop and market is located near El Pollo Rey, so stop by afterward if you’re still hungry! San Antonio’s serves tacos with a freshly made tortilla and a huge helping of meat. Next comes the fun part… they serve it with toppings and a four-salsa sampler so you get to choose how to dress your own taco. Both of these spots are part of the KCK Taco Trail, which sounds like a taco lovers dream!

Taco Naco

Taco Naco is truly a tasty delight. You can’t go wrong with any taco on the menu, but the Cochinita Pibil Taco with slow cooked pork, chipotle aioli and red pickled onions served on corn tortillas is extra delicious! The chips and salsa sampler and margaritas make for a great combo meal. The atmosphere is colorful, vibrant and has a family friendly cheerful vibe at both locations in Westport and Overland Park.

Torchy’s Tacos

Torchy’s Tacos started out of a food truck in Austin and quickly expanded across the country, now with three locations in the metro in Olathe, Overland Park and in Ward Parkway Center. We recommend the Tipsy Chick, Mr. Orange and the Trailer Park tacos. And don’t shy away from the margaritas to go either!

Oscars Authentic Mexican Grill

We loved this authentic Mexican grill for their family meals. Choose from the Taco Box with 10 tacos for $32.99 or the Taco Bundle for an easy taco bar at home that feeds 6-8 people. Check out their Facebook page for other deals and promotions!

Tiki Taco

Part taco shop, part tiki bar, the quirky Tiki Taco serves up California-style Mexican fast food. We love the Tempura Baja Shrimp Taco and the variety of fun drinks!

Los Alamos Cocina

For an early morning authentic Mexican breakfast, head to Summit Street to visit Los Alamos Cocina. The breakfast tacos are worth getting up early for!

Taco Via

Taco Via holds so much history in Overland Park. Opening in 1968, some of Kansas City’s most famous make it a stop when they are in town. It’s not uncommon to see David Koechner or Jason Sudeikis standing in line for their tacos and nachos.

We hope you love these spots as much as our team does!

Laura Mulcahy
Laura is wife to Marty, and mom to Michael (11), Joseph (9) and Anna (5). She spends most of her days juggling working from home, shuffling kids to activities and can usually be found cheering on the boys from the baseball stands. She is born and raised in Kansas City, graduated from KU (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!) and has spent most of her career in advertising sales. She loves big Italian family dinners, trying out new restaurants in Kansas City on a rare date night and can never say no to an impromptu dance party with her kids.
