Audiobooks to Entertain Your Children on Summer Road Trips

This post is sponsored by Johnson County Library.

There’s something magical about the open road, the windows down, snacks within reach and miles of adventure ahead. Then you remember there are kids in the back, and your dreams of a peaceful drive crash back to reality!

Our family barely hits the highway before the “Are we there yet?” chants begin. That is where audiobooks have been a lifesaver on our summer vacations. They are the secret sauce to keeping kids from hours of screen time and endless asks for rest stops. Great stories entertain, spark imagination and create conversation. Whether you are headed to the mountains, beach or just Grandma’s house, these audiobooks will turn your car into a storytelling sanctuary.

We have rounded up some of the best family friendly audiobooks, grouped by age range, so everyone from toddlers to teens (and parents, too!) can get in on the fun.

Kristin Ruthstrom
Kristin is a Lee’s Summit suburb transplant, after living in the Brookside and Plaza areas for over eight years. Raising three young boys with her husband, Jake, has helped her to embrace the messy, wild side of life where love is expressed in bear hugs and body slams. Professionally, she can be found teaching classes as an adjunct professor in the areas of Business, Marketing and PR. She is able to provide her students with applicable, real-life knowledge as she draws from several years working in the corporate sector. “Free time” (ha!, what's that again?) is spent on an occasional date night to favorite local restaurants, reading blogs on everything from home design to politics, riding her sweet beach cruiser bike and thinking of ways to convince her husband to do yet another home improvement project.
