There are lots of great places in the Kansas City metro where you can grab a donut! National Donut Day is the first Friday in June but every day is a good day for a donut! Just make sure you get there early, or better yet, order ahead!

Big Daddy Donuts | Raymore, MO

Daylight Donuts has been around for over 65 years and they are a mainstay in the KC area. All of their locations are on the Kansas side of the metro. Some of their locations also offer cookies from Blue Chip Cookies and ice cream from Sylas and Maddys! One thing Daylight is known for are their donut letters. Preorder these for a birthday surprise or any other occasion where you want to say something…with donuts.

Donut King | North Kansas City, MO

2320 Armour Rd, North Kansas City, MO 64116 | Websitedonut king

I loved the huge variety of donuts and the drive-thru window. Even at 2 p.m., they still had a full case of fresh donuts to choose from. The orange cake donut with orange glaze was my favorite. They also offer letter shaped donuts (to spell out Happy Birthday, etc.) and giant donuts with customized messages on them.

Donutology | Kansas City, MO

My daughter loved being able to design her own mini donuts and choose from their large assortment of toppings. There is also a full case of classic donuts to choose from. This is a really fun and unique experience for kids with 40,000 possible customizations!

Doughboys Donuts | Raytown, MO

At Doughboys, the donuts are made by hand, not by machine. Their apple fritters are one of their popular items and they have nine different kinds of fillings for their donuts including key lime and strawberry! You can also build your own donut by picking what type of icing and toppings you’d like.

Duck Donuts

Duck Donuts | Leawood, KS

12130 State Line Rd, Leawood, KS 66209 | Website

A local branch of this franchise opened in 2019 with their customizable cake donuts. The donuts come right off the line and are iced and decorated and still warm when they hand them over to you. You can choose from a list of suggested topping combinations or create your own.

Fairway Creamery | Fairway, KS

5938 Mission Rd, Fairway, KS 66205 | Website

We love this place because they serve amazing donuts AND soft serve ice cream. Two of my favorites! I loved the ability to order our donuts online the day before and then have them brought out to my car in the morning. These donuts are fancier than many other local shops and contain no artificial flavors.

Fluffy Fresh Donuts | Mission & KCMO

5729 Johnson Dr, Mission, KS 66202 | Website

10123 State Line Rd, Kansas City, MO 64114 | Websitefluffy donuts

These proved to be the most elusive of all the donuts. Twice I tried to get to the Mission location in time for donuts but they were sold out by 8:15 a.m.! I finally had success on a weekday at the State Line location. The Mission location is a cash/check only shop but the State Line location also takes cards. The donuts may not look as pretty as some of the other shops we visited but they were so delicious. They’ve won the “Best of KC award” multiple times. If you want donuts from the Mission location I highly recommend calling the day before and ordering so they’ll have them set aside for you.

Fresh Donuts | Kansas City, MO

5557 NW Barry Rd, Kansas City, MO 64154 | Website

This new spot in the Northland offers donuts, cronuts, and kolaches. They are regularly rolling out new fresh donuts so if you time it right you might even get a hot donut. Don’t be turned away by the line, it moves fast and the donuts are worth the wait!

Hana’s Donuts | Kansas City, KS

2131 S 34th St, Kansas City, KS 66106 | Website

Hana’s has been serving freshly made donuts since 2012. They are known for their fritters and have a wide selection of donuts to choose from. You can also find Hana’s Donuts served at DOP Donuts in downtown Overland Park.

Holts Do-Nuts | Grandview, MO

1325 Main St, Grandview, MO 64030 | Website

Holts has been around for decades and they are famous for their pudding filled long johns. Make sure to get there EARLY if you want to snag one! They have a buy 10 get 2 free deal on their donuts and offer a variety of glazed and cake donuts made fresh every morning.

KC Donut Company | Three Locations in Olathe

401 S Parker St, Olathe, KS 66061

You won’t find a website or online ordering for KC Donut Company but you will find delicious donuts if you get there early enough! They have a wide variety of donuts but the blueberry and the glazed chocolate cake donuts are my favorites.

Lamar’s Donuts | Nine Locations

Mission and Overland Park locations in Kansas | Website
Blue Springs, Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, and Liberty locations in Missouri | Website

This has long been one of my favorite local donut places. They have a rewards card that will earn you free donuts and coffee, and you even get a free donut on your birthday and on National Donut Day too!

Mr. D’s Donut Shop | Two Locations

11222 W 75th St, Shawnee, KS 66214 | Website

8750 Penrose Ln, Lenexa, KS 66219 | WebsiteDs donuts

This may be my new favorite. The chocolate twist is amazing and their blueberry donut may be even better than the ones at Lamar’s, which is saying something! Their customer service is great. I messaged them my order the night before and was able to pick it up the next morning. They even brought them out to me! I do not like filled donuts, but my friend swears by their filled long johns. They recently opened a second location at the Lenexa Public Market.

Ray’s Donuts | Kansas City, MO

315 NE Vivion Rd, Kansas City, MO 64118 | Website

This is a family run donut shop in the Northland that serves a large variety of donuts. It may look like a hole in the wall shop but rest assured the donuts are delicious.

Julia Willhite
I'm Julia and I live in Olathe with my husband of 16 years, my 10 and 6 year old daughters, and our rescue pug Mabel. I’m a social worker turned SAHM and love Dr. Pepper, thunderstorms, and talking to other adults. I hate coffee, diet culture, and washing dishes. I'll talk your ear off about the best local parks and which restaurants have wronged me by changing their long-standing menu items. I try to walk the line between knowing a lot of stuff and not being a know-it-all. Some days I'm better than others.

  1. Slivinski’s Kearney! Yum! gotta get there early for the best selection! They also have delicious cakes and other baked treats. Closed on Monday.

  2. Our favorite is Ray’s Donuts in Gladstone MO – that’s where we’ll be this Friday for National Donut Day. 🙂 Delicious selection and tiny hole in the wall. Bummer they didn’t make the list above!

  3. I really like Pike’s Place but have another favorite too! It’s a new donut shop called KC Fresh Donuts by Barry and I29 up north! It’s like you’re biting into air when you’re eating a glazed donut!

    • They closed last year! City of Overland Park wouldn’t renew their special use permit for that space. Totally sucks because they were great!
