The Cox Family enjoys a Dr. Dolittle show at The Coterie Theatre

The Coterie Theatre is a wonderful way for many different ages to enjoy live theater! This summer, you can talk to the animals with Dr. Dolittle. This new youth and family adaptation of the movie musical is geared for all ages and is a great indoor activity to beat the extreme heat of the summer.

The show is approximately one hour long, which is the perfect length for small kids or big kids that don’t like to sit still for too long. Seating is not assigned and opens 30 minutes prior to the show. Kids can sit on the floor by the stage or in the seats with their families. Dr. Dolittle only runs through August 6 – so put a date on the calendar now, and get tickets for your family!

Dr. Dolittle Synopsis

Book, Music and Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse

Eccentric Doctor Dolittle, a country physician, has learned to talk to animals—complicating his life and leading to trouble with authorities. Accompanied by his tutor and mentor, Polynesia (a 200-year-old parrot)—as well as a trusty band of human and animal companions—the Doctor sets out to change the way animals are treated and understood in the world. The songs include “I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It,” “My Friend the Doctor,” and the marvelous Academy Award winning song, “Talk to the Animals.”

Why You Should See It

If you have people in your family that love animals or nature, this show will be a hit. My kids weren’t familiar with the story of Dr. Dolittle, and they didn’t need to be to quickly be engrossed in it. Additionally, you don’t have to be a huge theater family or live theater lover to fully enjoy a Coterie show. It’s great for a variety of audiences because of the adaption, the layout of the theatre, and of course, the amazing talent. Even newbies will leave wanting to come back for another show

When I asked our kids to describe the show they said, “spectacular, funny & exciting.” All of our family was engaged throughout the entire show – not an easy feat with elementary, middle and high schoolers. We love how the actors move throughout the theatre and make you feel like you are part of the show. Every seat at the Coterie is a good one! We’ve made attending The Coterie a tradition and look forward to a few shows a year.

Mom Tips for the Coterie Theatre

  • Don’t be late! Late seating will be at the discretion of the management. We always try to be there at least one hour before showtime for pre-show restroom visits and a quick snack. Seating opens 30 minutes prior to showtime.
  • Enhance your experience by purchasing an add-on. The past few shows we have been to have had a special themed item available to purchase at the box office that  goes along with the show. This time, it was a snap on bracelet with a parrot – like Polynesia. All four of my kids wanted one — so plan accordingly. The cost was $5 per item and tax was included.
  • Take a photo in front of the set. Before or after the show, you can capture a photo in front of the stage. These make great memories to talk about with your family.

Melanie Olson-Cox
Hi, my name is Melanie Olson-Cox. I grew up in Lee’s Summit, MO & have chosen to raise my family here as well. I’m married to Andy, and we have 4 children, ranging in ages from 9-17 I currently work full-time in the marketing & communications department for a community mental health provider. Prior to joining ReDiscover, I have worked for advertising agencies and was a freelance social media manager & content creator while my children were younger.  I enjoy connecting with others and constantly learning how to be the best human I can be. Causes I am passionate about are: PTA & PTA legislative advocacy for public schools, Moms Demand Action, being an ally for LGBTQIA community & helping my kids learn that this world is a big place but they can make a difference - even in non-traditional ways. Raising kids is challenging - each age/phase brings new learnings and helps me grow as a person & as a parent. My hot take about parenting is “people (or our kids) often don’t want advice, but rather someone to listen and validate their feelings. After we do that, we can ask them if they want us to share experiences, struggles and emotions we went through with the hopes that it might help offer perspective.
