Guide to Fantastic Caverns with Kids

As someone who has spent a large number of vacations passing through southern Missouri, the abundant signs pointing toward Fantastic Caverns outside of Springfield, Missouri can’t be missed. Until recently, the opportunity to check it out wasn’t possible.

What we found on our short detour was an underground adventure that was party cliche and cheesy, part fascinating, but all-around fun. It’s America’s only ride through cave experience where families can sit back, relax and soak in nature’s masterpiece. Turns out, Fantastic Caverns lives up to its name and genuinely is fantastic.

Guide to Fantastic Caverns

What Makes It So Unique?

The ride via a large propane powered Jeep and wagon, takes approximately 60 minutes with narrated stops along the way. It winds through impressive stalactites, stalagmites and columns of rock forms. The tricky terrain of caves and the slippery surfaces are the reason for the ride, but it also means families can cover a large area quickly. No hiking boots, no whining about tired legs, no leaving the stroller behind. Just hop in, sit down and let the natural beauty roll by. Pro tip: It’s also a great place to take less mobile grandparents who would like to accompany you on a day trip or weekend!

The cave itself is fascinating, filled with dramatic formations, all nicely lit to highlight their grandeur. The tour guides are full of fun facts and stories, keeping even the squirmiest kids entertained with tales of ancient geology, Civil War history and early cave exploration.

What Kids Will Love

Let’s be honest, kids aren’t always impressed by “natural wonders”, but the sometimes corny tour leaders make it feel like a cross between a cave expedition and a theme park attraction. Our kids, which span a wide range of ages, all found it to be fun and interesting. The lighting inside the cave makes everything look magical, the sheer size of the chambers are hard to believe and the sounds of bats flying inspire big gasps from little mouths.

Even more, the guides know how to keep things kid friendly without dumbing it down, talking about animal habitats, fossil discoveries and the cool way water carves rock over thousands of years. They will learn about the cave’s discovery in 1862 and the brave women explorers of 1867 whose names are still visible on the cave walls. For curious minds and wiggly legs, this is 60 minutes of wonder with zero whining.

The end of the ride ends with a drive through a trickling waterfall. Warning, you might get wet, much to the surprise and delight of little ones!

What to Know Before You Go

Arrive Early or Midweek if You Can. This place is popular for a reason, especially in the summer and on weekends. Mid-morning tours on weekdays tend to be less crowded and more relaxed. If visiting on a weekend, prepare to wait in line.

Tickets are purchased on-site. There are no advanced ticket sales, unfortunately. Thus, the reason for not arriving during peak hours, if possible.

Bring a Light Jacket. No matter how hot it is outside, the cave stays at a cool 60°F year round. Even in the hot summer, it feels very cool.

Check for Discounts. Fantastic Caverns often partners with local hotels and visitor centers for coupons. Military families, AAA members and groups may qualify for special rates. Children under 5 are always free, and ages 6 to 12 are half price of the adults.

Don’t Skip the Visitor Center. There’s a gift shop with snacks, souvenirs and restrooms.

Pack a Picnic. There are beautiful shaded picnic areas outside the cave, perfect for lunch or a snack before heading back on the road. Let the kids run off some energy while you enjoy the fresh air.

All ages are welcome, but the sweet spot for kids seems to be about 7 to 14. Wiggly toddlers might be tough to wrangle for an hour sitting still, depending, of course, on the temperament of your child.

Handicap accessible ramps make the tour accessible for everyone.

It’s a rare place where everyone, small child to grandma, can enjoy the same adventure at the same time. Fantastic Caverns is waiting underground, ready to entertain and amaze everyone in your family!
