Guide to Kansas City Public Pools

Summer is here, and the pools are open! If you are new to the area or looking to try out some different pools this year we’ve got the breakdown on the best public pools in the Kansas City metro. This guide is organized by city and includes pool hours, cost, and what kind of fun features each one has to offer.

Public Pool Money Saving Tips

  • City residents pay the lowest price at their city pools but anyone is welcome to pay the non-resident fee to enter (except in Independence where they are only allowing their residents this year).
  • If you want to save some money look into a season pass, punch card, or visiting a pool that offers discounted passes in the evening.
  • Toddler time is offered at several pools during the morning hours. Entry is typically discounted and is included for season pass holders. It is important to note that you have to leave and re-enter between morning swim and when the pool opens to the public in the afternoon. Days, time, and age vary so check and see what your pool offers.

What You Can Bring

  • Most city pools do not allow inflatable ride-on toys but you can bring diving toys and some do allow pool noodles. Bringing your own life jacket or puddle jumper is encouraged although some pools do have life jackets you can borrow. Check the pool’s website or call ahead if you’re unsure about what is allowed.
  • Many pools allow you to bring in coolers with food and drink but some do not. Be sure not to bring any glass containers.

Pool Schedule Variations

  • Hours may vary on the 4th of July and a few random nights during the season for swim team competitions.
  • Pool hours are significantly shortened in August even before local schools start since pools rely on college and high school students for staffing. Some pools close and others are only open on weeknights and weekends starting in August. Labor Day is the last day local pools are open.

Mom Pro Tip

  • Kids that are not potty-trained must wear swim diapers (re-useable or disposable). Remember that these diapers do NOT absorb pee so don’t put that diaper on before you put them in their car seat! Wait til you get to the pool or layer a regular diaper over the swim diaper just in case.

Julia Willhite
I'm Julia and I live in Olathe with my husband of 16 years, my 10 and 6 year old daughters, and our rescue pug Mabel. I’m a social worker turned SAHM and love Dr. Pepper, thunderstorms, and talking to other adults. I hate coffee, diet culture, and washing dishes. I'll talk your ear off about the best local parks and which restaurants have wronged me by changing their long-standing menu items. I try to walk the line between knowing a lot of stuff and not being a know-it-all. Some days I'm better than others.
