There are tons of options when it comes to enrolling your child in a recreational sports league in the Kansas City area. Rec leagues are open to everyone and do not require kids to try out for a spot on the team. Often kids can request to be placed on a team with a friend (so long as they are the same age/grade) and many times teams are formed around school boundaries so if the kids go on to play school sports they will know some of their teammates.
Rec leagues are a great way to try out several different sports to determine what your child likes (or doesn’t like). Seasons are typically only a couple of months long and you can also try a shorter option like a camp to get a taste of a sport.
Rec leagues are also much less expensive than competitive and club sports and the time commitment is not as intense. The most affordable option is likely your local parks and recreation program or the YMCA. Some leagues have practice one evening a week while others have practice and games on the same day (great for busy families!)
Because there are so many options for rec leagues, ask your neighbors and friends which organization their child has enjoyed and consider these tips for picking a good youth sports program.
Mom Pro Tip
Don’t feel like you need to buy brand new gear when trying a new sport. Check out local consignment and thrift stores and seasonal consignment sales, sport re-sale shops like Play it Again Sports, or ask on your local Buy Nothing group.
This guide is broken it down by state and city, but since some leagues play in multiple areas there is also a section for those leagues organized by specific sport as well as a list of leagues that offer multiple sports. Don’t see your favorite rec league listed? Please reach out and let us know so we can add it!
