It’s hard to believe but many of us have kids that are old enough to learn to drive! We’ve rounded up all the info you need to know as well as a list of driving schools in Kansas and Missouri.
Things to Know
- Kansas and Missouri have very different guidelines, including ages that instructional permits are given (Kansas allows a learner’s permit at age 14, in Missouri you must be 15). Review the Kansas guidelines here and the Missouri guidelines here.
- Make sure you have the correct documents when you go to the DMV to get your permit or license.
- Some driving schools require teens have some behind the wheel practice before they can start their driving lessons. Others will work with teens with no prior practice.
- One benefit of doing driving school is a potential car insurance discount (every bit helps!)
- Your school district may offer drivers ed during the summer, contact them for more information.
Driving Schools in Kansas
Completing the classroom requirement of programs in Kansas allows students to avoid having to take a written exam at the DMV. The program gives them a driver’s ed paper permit to turn in for their learner’s permit.
Behind the Wheel, Inc
- Program requires 16 hrs of class time (two 8 hour days) and 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. Free pickup offered for driving lessons.
- Located in Leawood.
Johnny Rowlands Driving Schools
- Program requires 8 hours of classroom instruction and three 2-hour driving lessons. Offers video and audio recording of all lessons.
- Class locations in North and South Overland Park, West Shawnee, and Prairie Village.
Johnson County Community College
- Program requires 8 hours of classroom instruction and then the same instructor does 6 one-hour driving lessons with the student.
- Class located at JCCC campus in Overland Park.
Kennedy Driving School
- Program includes 8 hours of classroom instruction and 6 one-hour driving lessons. Door to door pickup/dropoff included for driving lessons.
- Located in Overland Park.
Schuetz Driving School
- Program is 8 hours of classroom time and 6 hours of driving time. Student must have 5 hours of driving experience before scheduling their behind the wheel instruction.
- Located in Olathe.
Driving Schools in Missouri
A valid instructional permit is required before behind the wheel instruction is allowed in Missouri. This involves a vision exam, short written exam, and a road sign test at the license office.
A+ Missouri Driving Instruction
- 2-6 hour lessons available. Home pickup available.
- Serves a large area of Missouri, limited service in the Northland.
Blue Springs/Lee’s Summit Driving Instruction
- One-on-one private lessons in 2 hour increments.
- Not limited to the Blue Springs/Lee’s Summit area.
