If your kid has passed the point of needing annual swimming lessons but can’t get enough pool time, a summer swim team may be a great fit. The summer season usually lasts 5-6 weeks from right after Memorial Day to early July. They are more relaxed than year-round swim teams so if your child misses a few days for camp or a family trip they can still participate.
How to find your team is going to vary and we’ve outlined all the options below based on where you live. Many cities have a community swim team open to everyone. Neighborhood subdivisions and country clubs offer teams typically open only to residents/members.
Swim teams typically offer three options for participation.
- Pre-competitive for kids working on improving their swim strokes but not ready for competition yet. They need to be able to swim approximately 25 yards.
- Competitive for kids that know a couple standard strokes and want to race in local meets.
- Diving for kids that prefer diving over swimming.
Mom Pro Tips:
- Swim team is not a substitution for swim lessons.
- Parents are expected to volunteer during swim meets as there are many roles that need to be filled for them to run smoothly.
- Kids as young as 5 or 6 can often participate in the pre-competitive group.
