Where to Get and Give Food Assistance in Kansas City

bags of food

Times are hard for many Kansas City families and getting food on the table is a priority. We’ve put together a list of food pantries for each county, highlighting the ones that are open to everyone. We’ve also shared information about how those wanting to help can meaningfully contribute to ending hunger in Kansas City.

Harvesters Programs

The best central resource for finding food in the Kansas City metro is the food locator on the Harvesters website. You can sort your search by food pantries (some have residency requirements), mobile food pickup events (rarely have residency requirements), and kitchens (these serve on-site meals). You can narrow your search by radius and filter by day of the week.

If you want to see where mobile food distributions are happening THIS WEEK you’ll want to go to the Harvesters Facebook page where they post it weekly and include any changes or updates.

If you are specifically looking for food for kids, check out the Harvesters Meals for Kids Finder.

Mom Tip: Johnson County has MANY food pantries without geographical boundaries.

Non-Food Pantry Resources

  • Buy Nothing Groups on Facebook are a great place to ask for what you need and offer what you’ve got to give.
  • Free Hot Soup Kansas City hosts hot meals around the city and shares resources on their Facebook page. Families are welcome to sign up to make and serve food at their events.
  • Lasagna Love connects volunteer lasagna chefs with families in need of a meal made with love.
  • Reach out to your school counselor. They often have district specific resources they can share and get you signed up for weekend food backpack programs.

Best Ways to Help

  • Donate money. Food pantries can purchase food in bulk for lower prices than what we can get at stores.
  • Donate items. Check the organization’s “wish list” to see what is most needed.
  • Donate your time. Most pantries need volunteers to help, even if it’s just on occasion. Some allow kids to help but do have age limits (Harvesters you must be 12 except for special family volunteer days). For other ways to volunteer with kids, check this guide.

Julia Willhite
I'm Julia and I live in Olathe with my husband of 18 years, my 12 and 8 year old daughters, and our rescue pug Mabel. I’m a social worker turned SAHM and love Dr. Pepper, thunderstorms, and talking to other adults. I hate coffee, diet culture, and washing dishes. I'll talk your ear off about the best local parks and which restaurants have wronged me by changing their long-standing menu items. I try to walk the line between knowing a lot of stuff and not being a know-it-all. Some days I'm better than others.
