3 Things to Know about 529 Savings Accounts

This post is sponsored by the
Kansas Learning Quest® 529 Education Savings Program.

Eligible to Use for More Than College

While most people think of 529’s mostly for college savings, did you know that you can use the funds for private school tuition from kindergarten through 12th grade as well? The best part is that the earnings in a 529 account grow tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified education expenses, like private school tuition, are also tax-free. It can also be used for other education-related costs like fees, books, and even certain supplies. If you don’t use it for private school, it rolls over to college and future schooling. The flexibility is great for parents.

Prioritizing a 529 Plan After Daycare Expenses

Finding extra money to save for college seems daunting when everything is so expensive. Families that are used to regular daycare payments can allocate those funds once children enter kindergarten. Investing early and regularly as possible will allow the money to grow over time, so your 529 will be there when your pre-k student moves on to college!

Anyone Can Contribute to Your Child’s 529

When your children are born, college seems so far away, but it creeps on parents faster than you think. With daily expenses of raising children, its hard to imagine also saving for college. Did you know that almost anyone can contribute to your children’s 529 plan to help grow the account, including grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends? They make great birthday, holiday and graduation gifts.

As with any investment, it is possible to lose money by investing in this plan. The value of your Learning Quest account may fluctuate, and it is possible for the value of your account to be less than the amount you invested.
