Johnson Farms Guide to Picking Apples: Your Ultimate Orchard Experience

This post is sponsored by Johnson Farms.

Picking apples at Johnson Farms is more than just an activity — it’s a annual tradition our family always looks forward to for a fun day, not to mention tasty apples for weeks! To help you make the most of your apple-picking adventure, we’ve put together this comprehensive guide with the experts at Johnson Farms to ensure you navigate the orchard like a pro.

When to Visit

Best Time of Year

Apple-picking season runs from early September through late October. Johnson Farms is open to the public on weekends from Sept. 6-15, and daily Sept. 20-Oct. 31.

Mom Tip

Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon, weekdays if you can for less crowds. I enjoy taking my toddler for one-on-one time while the big kids are at school.

What to Bring

Containers

You can purchase pre-paid U-Pick bags at the admission gate. Fill your bag all the way as the cost is the same no matter how much it weighs.

How to Pick Apples

Choosing the Right Apple

Tractor drivers will guide you to the current apple-picking rows. Look for apples that are firm, vibrant in color, and free from bruises or blemishes. Gently twist the apple while lifting it from the tree to avoid damaging the fruit or the branch.

Picking Tips

  • Twist and Pull. Hold the apple and give it a gentle twist. If it comes off easily, it’s ripe and ready. Avoid yanking or pulling too hard.
  • Pick at the Right Height.  Bring a picking pole if you have one, but otherwise, pick at your height or lower.
  • Quality Over Quantity. Select the best apples and avoid over-picking to ensure each apple you take home is of the highest quality.

Wait to Eat

Resist the temptation to eat your apples (we know it’s hard!) until you get home and wash them thoroughly.
