Flights of Fancy Mega Kite Festival

Date: April 12, 2026 | Noon – 5 p.m.
Location: MCC-Longview, Lee’s Summit

Great American Kites will once again take over the lawn of the picturesque MCC-Longview campus in the heart of kite month, with awe-inspiring mega kites, power kites, stunt kites, and more. You’ll even see the world’s largest windsock, which is three stories high and 200 feet long!

Bring the whole family, along with lawn chairs or blankets and a kite if you have one. Numerous food trucks will be on hand to satisfy your food and beverage cravings — something for everyone. Learn more.

Kite Festival: Wind, Art and Science

Location: Kansas Union First Floor and Spencer Museum of Art

Co-hosted with the Spencer Museum of Art, our annual Kite Festival provides an opportunity for families to learn about the physics of kites and the art and culture of East Asia. This year, we also celebrate Children’s Day, a national holiday in Japan and South Korea. Learn about how kites are made and decorate your own, enjoy a selection of kite and chidlren-related art, and learn about the wind and make a paper airplane. Learn more.

Location: Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

Soar into the sky and let your spirits fly high at Kite Fest! Join us for a breezy day of colorful kites. The event will take place in the open green space outside of the Arboretum. Don’t forget your kite, water bottle, bug spray and lawn chairs or picnic blankets for a day of fun, friends and family. Kites will be available for purchase. Picnics are welcome, and this event is free. Regular admission applies if you enter the gardens. Learn more.

Sarah grew up in Manhattan, Kansas (Go Cats!), she moved to Minnesota where she met her husband, Shea. Realizing how much she hated snow in May, she convinced him to move to Kansas City in 2010. Together they have lived in Midtown, Waldo, the Plaza, and now Overland Park. Sarah is mom to four kids including a teenager and a toddler. She has her master’s in urban administration and is passionate about making Kansas City a more equitable and supportive community. In between the crazy, she likes to drink coffee, run, hike, travel as much as possible, and experience all things Kansas City!
