Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, Big Cedar Lodge transforms into a winter wonderland from November to January. Known for its rustic charm, family friendly activities and breathtaking views, Christmas at Big Cedar Lodge offers the perfect blend of nature and seasonal cheer. If you’re planning a trip to the resort during the holidays, here are some insider tips to make the most of your experience.
Tips for a Perfect Holiday Getaway to Big Cedar Lodge
Book Early – Lodging Fills Up Fast!
Big Cedar Lodge is a popular destination, but especially so during the Christmas season. The lodge offers various accommodations, from hotel rooms to cabins or luxurious lodges. All are decked out with festive decor. Reservations fill up quickly, so book as far in advance as possible to secure your preferred lodging. If you’re late to the game, check for last-minute cancellations, as they occasionally pop up.
Insider tip: Timeshare owners within the resort often advertise on sites like VRBO and Facebook Marketplace to help rent on specific dates. You’ll have access to the entire resort, and accommodations can be relatively inexpensive compared to booking through Big Cedar Lodge. Just make sure you verify its authenticity before transferring money!
Experience the Stunning Light Displays
Twinkling lights are what give the holidays their sense of magic and wonder, in my humble opinion. Big Cedar agrees and goes all in with their absolutely beautiful displays. Every evening, the resort glows with thousands, if not millions of lights, illuminating the lodge’s picturesque buildings, trees, pathways, common areas and displays. In fact, my most emphatic tip for enjoying a holiday getaway to the area is to hit up ALL of the sparkling displays starting at dusk. Seek out the following:
- Drive-thru, self guided light tour. This is open to the public at a cost, but complimentary to those staying on the resort.
- Holiday tram tour of the lights.
- Participate in the holiday lights scavenger hunt for a chance at a fun prize at the end. This is best for those with older children as it requires a lot of walking.
- Take a trip to the main lobby, which features a massive, beautifully decorated Christmas tree and lighted village.
- Every Saturday, November through December (and Christmas Eve), the resort hosts a complimentary tree lighting, and kids can sit in photos with Santa if they so choose.
- Choose to ice skate after all of the aforementioned activities, which is next to the main Christmas tree of the resort, and is beautifully decorated as well.
Consider making advance reservations for any and all of these activities as they often sell out quickly!
Enjoy Holiday Themed Activities
Big Cedar Lodge is known for its year-round activities, but Christmas brings a unique lineup of holiday-themed experiences. Some highlights include:
- Horse-drawn carriage rides through the grounds.
- Visits with Santa.
- Parties with Mrs. Claus in a cozy cabin (parties is plural, because there’s several different opportunities throughout the season).
- Elf visits where you’ll receive a personalized gift, visit and book reading.
- Holiday craft workshops like ornament-making, pottery painting, baking, stocking decorating and gingerbread build offs.
- Turkey Shootout over the Thanksgiving weekends.
- Shopping with elves where kids can shop for mom, dad, grandparents, siblings and more with a dedicated amount and responsible supervisor.
Check the lodge’s activity calendar to see when the events are offered and to make prior reservations, as these popular events often require them. There’s even adult themed, organized events, like charcuterie gingerbread house making, mixology or a leather burning workshop when you need time away from the kids!
Visit the Fun Mountain Recreation Center
Kids always love a visit to the arcade. From games and laser tag to bowling and a climbing wall, there’s something for every family member and kids of all ages. The center also has winter themed activities, so check their schedule for events that will add an extra dose of holiday magic. Save this for the day you check out so you will have an excuse to leave, otherwise you might never be able to pull them away!
Insider Tip: The center offers childcare! Take the opportunity to have a dinner out with your significant other, or even better, hit up the world-class spa while the kids are having a blast!
Take a Nature Walk or Enjoy Winter Sports
Big Cedar Lodge is surrounded by beautiful nature trails perfect for winter walks. Trails are well maintained and offer a peaceful way to connect with the Ozark landscape. If you’re up for something more adventurous, try fishing, golf, or even a quick trip to Dogwood Canyon nearby for scenic views and recreation. If there’s snow, the hills surrounding the lodge provide a great spot for a little sledding.
Attend the Christmas Eve Service or Holiday Show in Branson
The resort offers a traditional Christmas Eve service in their chapel, which is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday’s spiritual side. Alternatively, Branson is famous for its holiday shows, and several local theaters host special Christmas performances, from traditional carols to festive country music shows.
Venture Over to the Top of the Rock
Resting beautifully at the highest elevation in Taney County, Top of the Rock offers additional attractions either a short drive or stroll away.
- Golf Cart Tours are always popular, but the holiday themed rides in the evening will be a huge hit with the entire family. Highly recommend!
- The Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum is a must visit for history buffs. This is an incredibly poignant and interesting look at Ozark and Native American artifacts.
Capture the Moment
Picture-perfect moments, holiday themed scenes and festive backdrops are in abundance everywhere you look. Be ready to snap away!
Big Cedar Lodge is an idyllic holiday destination where parents can soak up those precious, Santa-loving years in a relaxing and beautiful location. Just remember to book early, dress warmly and immerse yourself in the festive spirit. With these tips in hand, you’re all set for an unforgettable holiday trip to the Ozarks.
