Guide to the East and West Bottoms of Kansas City

West Bottoms: A Blend of History and Modern Flair

The West Bottoms is a historic district renowned for its industrial architecture, burgeoning arts scene and First Weekend attractions. New restaurants, bars and retail stores are always popping up, and a revival is more than on its way.

First Friday Shopping Destinations

The West Bottoms come alive during a First Friday Weekend, a cherished tradition that transforms the district into a thrifter’s paradise. Large, multi-level warehouses open their doors Friday through Sunday, revealing a treasure trove of antique, vintage and home décor shops. During warm spring months, you’ll find live music playing, food trucks lining the streets and patrons criss-crossing through the streets to find their next beloved treasure. The following shops are worth seeking out.

Bella Patina. This popular stop is always offering something new and exciting. You’ll find everything from handmade goods to impressive antique collectibles and everything in between. The third floor is also home to a restaurant, called Painted Rooster, to keep you nourished as you shop. Follow Bella Patina on Instagram to see sneak peeks on goods they will be selling each month.

Charmed House Interiors: Open more often than just the first weekend of every month, Charmed House Interiors offers new home decor and furnishings. It is well staged and packed with options on all floors.

Good JuJu. One of the largest stores within the West Bottoms, Good JuJu is home to vintage clothes, antique furniture, vintage jewelry, Mid-century furniture, retro style collectibles and much more.

Stuffology. Shop here if you are looking for antique architectural finds, lighting fixtures or one-of-a-kind treasures.

Destinations for Date Night or Girls’ Gatherings

After a day of shopping, refuel at some of the district’s culinary gems and hip bars.

Amigoni Urban Winery. Indulge in a wine tasting experience within an urban setting, offering a cozy ambiance ideal for couples, girls nights or office happy hour.

Blip Roasters. It’s a coffee shop with a side of motorcycles. Yes, you read that correctly. Blip began in the West Bottoms as a wholesale roasting company. Pour-over service started as folks would wander in off the street, curious about the smell and the motorcycles out front. It’s now rated one of the top coffee shops in the state of Missouri.

The Campground. They take pride in locally sourced foods and ingredients which makes this cozy setting always in demand.

Chef J BBQ. If there’s a line around the block, you know it’s going to be good! It may be newer on the scene than the traditional BBQ stops KC is known for, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth checking out.

Golden Ox: A phenomenal steakhouse in the Stockyard District. If it’s good enough for a Travis/Taylor date night, it is most certainly good enough for the rest of us!

In the Lowest Ferns: If you are looking to dance, head to In the Lowest Ferns. A HIFI lounge with rotating live acts and DJs will get you moving.

Lemonade Park: Born from the pandemic, it’s now a nice weather go-to for live music in a laid back atmosphere. Order food from Voltaire or Golden Ox if you get hungry white hanging.

The Ship:. It gives speakeasy vibes, with great bites and new twists on classic drinks.

Stockyards Brewing Co: Unwind at this laidback brewery while listening to local live music. Its name came from its unique location within the original Livestock Exchange.

Voltaire: Looking for a sophisticated date night spot? Then make reservations at Voltaire. Great food, cool vibe and an impressive selection of dishes.

Seasonal Events

Haunted Houses. The Beast, Edge of Hell and Macabre Cinema are ready to scare you every fall season. Halloween lovers descend on the West Bottoms when the weather starts to cool and the leaves begin to fall. The old, abandoned buildings deliver the eerie feelings while the actors inside make sure you feel utterly terrified before you leave.

ProRodeo: Hale Arena within the West Bottoms hosts the annual ProRodeo every April/May, where top cowboys and cowgirls from across the country compete for the big buckle!

American Royal Events: Throughout the year, fun American Royal events take place. Catch livestock shows, barbecue contests, youth rodeos and so much more.

Raising three young boys with her husband, Jake, has helped her to embrace the messy, wild side of life where love is expressed in bear hugs and body slams. Professionally, she can be found teaching classes as an adjunct professor in the areas of Business, Marketing and PR. She is able to provide her students with applicable, real-life knowledge as she draws from several years working in the corporate sector. “Free time” (ha!, what's that again?) is spent on an occasional date night to favorite local restaurants, reading blogs on everything from home design to politics, riding her sweet beach cruiser bike and thinking of ways to convince her husband to do yet another home improvement project.
