Preventative Screenings Every Mom Should Prioritize

This post is sponsored by HCA Midwest Health.

May is Women’s Health Month, and if you’re like most moms, your family’s appointments are probably already on the calendar. But what about yours?

Preventive screenings are one of the most powerful ways to protect your health, yet they’re often the first thing moms put off. The good news is many of these tests are quick, routine and potentially lifesaving.

Here’s a simple guide to the key screenings every woman should keep on her radar and how HCA Midwest Health makes it easier to stay on track.

Ready to get started? Find a primary care doctor with HCA Midwest Health and schedule your next screening close to home.

Must-have Screenings for Women

Depending on your age, family history and lifestyle, your doctor may recommend different screenings. Here are some of the most important ones to know:

Mammograms (starting at 40)

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, but early detection through annual mammograms can significantly improve outcomes. According to the American Cancer Society, women at average risk have the option to begin annual mammograms at age 40.

For women who are at a higher risk for breast cancer, your doctor may recommend that you start mammograms at age 30.

Pap smears and pelvic exams (starting at 21)

These screenings help detect abnormal cells that could lead to cervical cancer. Most women need a Pap smear every three years starting at age 21, but your provider may recommend a different schedule based on your risk factors.

Colonoscopy (starting at 45)

Studies show that colorectal cancer is on the rise in younger people (under 50). This makes getting a colonoscopy even more important starting at age 45. A colonoscopy can identify and remove precancerous polyps.

Heart screenings

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. Screenings like blood pressure checks and coronary calcium scans can help detect risks early, especially for women 45+ or those with risk factors.

Lung cancer screening (ages 50–80, if eligible)

For women with a history of smoking, an annual low-dose CT scan can detect lung cancer at earlier, more treatable stages.

Take the next step for your health

Your health isn’t one-size-fits-all. Factors like family history, lifestyle and existing conditions all play a role. A primary care provider can help you understand your personal risk and create a screening plan that’s right for you.

With multiple locations across the Kansas City area, HCA Midwest Health offers convenient access to preventive care, so you can prioritize your health without adding more stress to your schedule.
