Parenting Perspectives

Kansas City Mom Collective was born in 2012 with a simple hope: “We want to bring online mothers together offline in meaningful and lasting community; discussions that start after a blog post on the “latest and greatest” parenting techniques and end over a cup of coffee at one of KC’s great local coffee shops.”

Now the premier site for parenting in Kansas City, we are passionate about KC’s women and families. Our writing team speaks to the best and most difficult aspects of parenting and reminds you to take care of yourself sometimes, too.

We hope by offering different parenting perspectives, you’ll find you are less alone in your parenting journey.

Adoption: The Need.

1
Adoption. A word that I believe we are hearing in a more positive light in our country these days. I'm excited and thankful that this word is becoming more and more familiar to our ears. The reason I get excited...
I was a better friend before I had kids.  There, I said it. Has that ever tugged at your heart as a mom? It repeatedly tugs at mine. I compare what I can do now with who I was a decade...
I’m the middle child, halfway between my older sister and younger brother, all born to parents who have been married for over fifty years. I would describe my family life as normal – mostly good with bouts of dysfunction...
I love children's books. Even before I had kids, I loved reading to my nieces and nephews and kept a mental list of all the books I would want to add to my child's collection one day. I always...

(Note: This is the second post in our series dedicated to Prematurity Awareness Day; to read the other posts in this series, click here.) During our routine twenty-week sonogram with our first pregnancy, we learned that we were expecting twins. This revelation...
I've asked myself this question many times over the past eleven years. It was always more out of wonderment until now ... The first time was right after he really started walking and then stopped walking to start running -...

My Kids DON’T NEED a HOT mom

The recent HOT topic about the mom who posted a picture showing off her post-babies bod has been on my mind a lot these past few weeks. The changes my body is going through while being pregnant with my third...

Teaching Thankfulness

Last night, as I was tucking my son into bed, I asked him what he was thankful for.  The conversation went like this: Me: Let’s say our prayers. What are you thankful for today? M: I’m thankful that I’m a leaf...
There are many people that will greatly influence the lives of your kids – teachers, neighbors, grandparents, etc. While all of those are important in my son’s life, the person that rises to the top isn’t among that list....
"I'm so sorry you have to go back to work." I received this sentiment in my email inbox from a well-meaning stay-at-home mama friend when I announced that my maternity leave was ending and I'd be going back to work...

Silent Grief

Next week will mark the day I've been dreading for nine months. It's the day I was supposed to be meeting our second baby. Instead, my first ultrasound last March confirmed a baby but no heartbeat. A few weeks later, I...
Two things I know are true: 1) moms are busy, which means we have a hard time finding time to work out (in a later post, we can talk more about how to find time for things like this!)...
Oh! I bet you have already guessed the BIG ones, haven't you? The ones that fall into the "cardinal sin" category and bring out the threats of washing a child's mouth out with soap. (WAIT - I have either caused you...
I have serious issues when it comes to the dentist. It might have something to do with my obsession with teeth while also being genetically prone to cavities; it might also have a lot to do with a story...

Cereal For Dinner

In my last post, I wrote about my love/hate relationship with meal planning and grocery shopping.  This week, I was feeling great about our trip to the grocery store and good about dinner plans, as well.  Ironically, we had cereal for...
