Spend a Day at Union Station in Kansas City

Union Station is Kansas City has enough fun to last an entire day, no matter what age your kids are. From learning about science and space to delighting miniature train villages to relaxing with a movie on the big screen, there’s enough to keep everyone happy. Check out the itinerary below and spend a day at Union Station!

Start your day with a breakfast at Harvey’s in the middle of the Union Station main entrance. This is one of our family’s favorites in all of Kansas City whether it’s the breakfast buffet or ordering from their extensive menu.

Science City

Science City

For your first stop, head to Science City. Whether you have a budding scientist, engineering, train lover, nature explorer or maker, there is something here for everyone. It seems like we spend a lot of our visit at the All Aboard and water exhibits. The baby and toddler areas are also great for little ones who are just exploring their world. Don’t miss the outdoor play structure, which is a super fun way to play outside and get out any energy you might have left!

Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium

Now that you’re all hot and sweaty, head to the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium to cool off and relax! The daily showings are listed online so be sure to plan your timing appropriately. Offerings change seasonally but we love the star tours. Relax in a bean bag or comfy chair and be transported to another galaxy!

You’re probably getting hungry, so head to Brancato’s Whistle Stop Market for a quick grab and go (and kid friendly) choices.

Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing

After lunch, you’ll want to check out the special exhibit area which is currently featuring Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing. My big kids loved this exhibit – exploring old comics and the history of Spider-Man along with his villains and spin off characters. There are hands-on elements throughout the exhibit that kept my younger ones occupied and the movie props are pretty awesome. There is a lot of reading so I would definitely recommend this for those that are proficient readers and comic book fans.

Model Train Gallery

No visit to Union Station is complete without a visit to the Model Train Gallery. We love checking out the special additions for the holidays and chatting with the curators of the teeny tiny villages.

Theatre Options at Union Station

Another option for the rest of your day is catching a movie or live show at one of the Union Station theaters. The Regnier Extreme Screen is the best place in KC to catch a movie with its screen measuring 80×53 feet.

If live theatre is more your jam, the City Stage Theatre regularly hosts local theater performances for kid audiences. Check out the event listings here.
