Kansas City Moms Blog Turns Five

Five years ago, Kansas City Moms Blog was born.

It began with a simple hope

Kansas City Moms BlogIn the Internet age, moms are faced with millions of ideas about who they’re supposed to be, what they’re supposed to wear, what their one-year-old’s Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday party is supposed to look like (thanks, Pinterest) … at the end of the day, we can become so obsessed with creating the life that we read about online that we lose sight of who we really are. At Kansas City Moms Blog, we want to bring online mothers together offline in meaningful and lasting community; discussions that start after a blog post on the “latest and greatest” parenting techniques and end over a cup of coffee at one of KC’s great local coffee shops. We want to embrace our commonality as moms while recognizing that we are not JUST moms! And, perhaps most of all, we look forward to enjoying all that KC has to offer us – as women, and as moms.

We started slow, building community with our friends and then their friends.

Our first team picture.

Now, five years later we’ve grown up. We’ve built community in Kansas City. We’ve connected Olathe with Liberty, Lee’s Summit with KCK. In fact, we’ve connected with more than 1.3 million of you online. We’ve connected you with each other and with our favorite Kansas City businesses, resources and charities which has led to almost 2.5 million page views.

We have partied with thousands of you at our events, including our favorite Noon Year’s Eve. We hope to see many of you at our fifth birthday party celebration this weekend.

And hopefully you, as many of you have told us, read at least one thing (among our 1,500+ posts) that made you feel less alone in your motherhood journey. That’s why we have built this business, with babies in our laps, while handing out sippy cups and coloring sheets; frequently asking our families to occasionally sacrifice pool time for “the blog.”

We couldn’t have done this without you.

In celebration, check out our top posts of all time.

Sarah McGinnity
Sarah grew up in Manhattan, Kansas (Go Cats!), she moved to Minnesota where she met her husband, Shea. Realizing how much she hated snow in May, she convinced him to move to Kansas City in 2010. Together they have lived in Midtown, Waldo, the Plaza, and now Overland Park. Sarah is mom to 10-year-old, Henry, 7-year-old Clark and 5-year-old Lucy. She has her master’s in urban administration and is passionate about making Kansas City a more equitable and supportive community. In between the crazy, she likes to drink coffee, run, hike, travel as much as possible, and experience all things Kansas City!
