Visit the 9/11 Memorial in Overland Park

The 9/11 Memorial in Overland Park, Kansas, is an opportunity to remember the Americans who were lost that day and educate our children who have no first hand memory of the tragedy.

The 9/11 Memorial at 12401 Hemlock, features a 14-foot twisted piece of steel from the World Trade Center towers. Two Overland Park firefighters applied in 2009 to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to become a caretaker for this piece of history from Ground Zero.

The memorial also features plaques with information about that day, telling the story of each of the four flights downed that day. You’ll also find a memorial wall with a full listing of the victim’s names. Finally, a weeping wall fountain honors those who survived the attacks.

When visiting with my kids, I was able to explain in a historical way what happened that day, but also what my experience was as a college freshman.

The city also holds an annual ceremony where two beams of light, representing the fallen towers, are illuminated in the sky above the 9/11 memorial. Check the city events calendar for updated information.
