My View: What Am I Preparing For?

empty shelves at Target

All the hand sanitizer is gone. I’d heard this, but hadn’t seen it until I was at Target this morning. When COVID-19 hit the Kansas City area over the weekend it made me wonder: should we be preparing for a pandemic? Being the type of person that hates to be unprepared for anything, I feel the pull to fill my freezer and stock up my pantry, just in case.

I don’t exactly know what I’m preparing FOR though. Will schools close (and for how long)? Will loved ones get sick? Will we have to cancel our summer vacation? Will our country plunge into a recession? Will it bring out the best or worst in people? All of these questions are making my head spin and starting to keep me up at night.

I’m also trying to decide if I should be proactive and try to explain the COVID-19 situation to my second grader or just wait and see if she hears about it at school and brings it up. I was a kid prone to anxiety, so I don’t want her to be alarmed when she learns about it.

After reading dozens of articles about the virus I still have more questions than answers right now. So I guess while we wait for more answers, I’m going to go wash my hands again.

I'm Julia and I live in Olathe with my husband of 16 years, my 10 and 6 year old daughters, and our rescue pug Mabel. I’m a social worker turned SAHM and love Dr. Pepper, thunderstorms, and talking to other adults. I hate coffee, diet culture, and washing dishes. I'll talk your ear off about the best local parks and which restaurants have wronged me by changing their long-standing menu items. I try to walk the line between knowing a lot of stuff and not being a know-it-all. Some days I'm better than others.
